Inspiring the Next Generation: WDM NZ Brings Highways Surveying to the Classroom

WDM NZ In the Community

Recently, WDM NZ had the pleasure of delivering a hands-on show and tell session on highways surveying to a local school in Plimmerton. The session introduced students to how roads are assessed, why surface condition and skid resistance matter, and how data plays a vital role in keeping communities safe.

Using real-world examples from our surveying work, we explained how specialist vehicles collect information on road condition and friction, and how engineers use this data to identify risk, plan maintenance, and prevent crashes before they happen. For many students, it was their first insight into how science, technology, and engineering combine in everyday infrastructure they use without a second thought.

Community outreach like this reflects WDM’s wider social values. By engaging with schools, we help demystify engineering careers, encourage curiosity, and show young people how data-driven decisions can make a real difference to public safety and sustainability. It also strengthens our connection to the communities where we work, reinforcing our commitment to responsibility, education, and long-term social impact.

Investing time in local engagement isn’t just about explaining what we do today, it’s about inspiring the problem-solvers of tomorrow and helping build safer, more resilient road networks for the future.
